ICAO Annex 5, Attachment E says, for numeric dates, to use 1983-08-25 (hyphens, not slashes). More importantly, it says "It should be emphasized that the ISO sequence should only be used where it is intended to use an all-numeric presentation. Presentations using a combination of figures and words may still be used if required (e.g. 25 August 1983)." The ISO standard is emphatic that it is intended for computer-to-computer communication, and is not necessarily the best format for humans.

Almost all aviation documents and messages currently use an all numeric date-time group (19830825) or a dd-mmm-yyyy (25 Aug 1983) format. The latter is more readable and less error-prone.

I recommend the dd-mmm-yyyy (25 Aug 1983) format, with the year omitted when needed. (Note, the spaces should be non-breaking spaces.)

Remember the regs: "Night" for logging purposes is the end of evening civil twilight to the beginning of morning civil twilight. "Night" for passenger-carrying currency purposes is 1 hour after sunset to ending 1 hour before sunrise. Both might be helpful here.
